I've often struggled with this mentality. For some young people, raking leaves or setting up chairs is a legitimate exercise of their gifts. But to relegate young people to only selected slots within the community is to deny the validity of their spiritual gifts.

Quite surprisingly leading a worship team is just like making a steak. You put all this time into making it the best set possible. You pour over the songs with uncontested fervor. It isn't enough that you found the exact key that most people will be able to sing the songs in, you go a step further to seek out others advice as to whether or not people will "Get" the songs.

At staff meeting today we had Jay Barber come in and do a little devotional with us. You could call it a break out session from our regular staff meeting. It would be amase-zazing if churches would look beyond the boarders of right and wrong ways to do church, and stretch out in to the unknown-ness and outright un-tameness of God. To actually subvert the "usual/that's how we've always done it" mentality and strike gold as a unfiltered expression of faith.

The American church today produces a massive amount of "Christian Porn" in the form of endless books on the same subject, banners, cd's, bulletins, Sunday service, Children's service. All of this "stuff" is made to try and convey one message, "Hey, we got it going on, come check us out."

We as the Church have started to peddle Jesus as a product. A trinket that we can put in our pocket and use when we need fresh breath. A bracelet for when we do not want the opposite sex to hit on us. The American Christ has become product that the Church uses to ensnare its community into coming to that specific place of worship.
